Dental Exams & Cleanings

Dental Exams

A Comprehensive Oral Evaluation is usually done by Dr. Nibouar or Dr. Annone at your first visit to our office. A Periodic Examination is done at your regular cleaning appointment and includes the following procedures:

  • Oral Cancer Screening: The face, neck, lips, tongue, throat, tissues, and gums are examined for  signs of oral cancer.
  • Digital X-rays: X-rays are taken (usually only once a year) to look for decay between the teeth and under existing fillings, and to check for early signs of gum disease.
  • Gum Disease Evaluation: The gums and bone around the teeth are examined for signs of inflammation or bone loss.
  • Examination for tooth decay: All tooth surfaces are checked for decay with special dental instruments.
  • Examination of existing restorations: Existing fillings and crowns are examined for leakage, wear and recurrent decay.
  • Home Care Evaluation: Your dental hygienist may recommend new materials or techniques to help you keep your mouth healthy between professional cleanings.

Professional Dental Cleaning

A Professional Dental Cleaning, also called a prophylaxis, is performed by a Registered Dental Hygienist.  Your cleaning appointment will include a dental examination and the following:

  • Removal of plaque: Plaque is a sticky, almost invisible film that forms on the teeth.  It is a growing colony of living bacteria, food debris, and saliva.  The bacteria produce toxins (poisons) that inflame the gums and also cause tooth decay.
  • Removal of calculus (tartar): Calculus is hardened plaque that forms on the surfaces of the teeth. It forms above and below the gum line and causes irritation of the gums (gingivitis). If not removed it can eventually lead to periodontal disease and tooth loss. Calculus can only be removed by scaling with special dental instruments.
  • Teeth polishing: Surface stains from coffee, tea, smoking and pigmented foods are polished off to brighten the teeth and restore their natural color.
